1/12/84 NASA Dryden Flight Research Center conduct a Controlled Impact Demonstration using a Boeing 720 with an additive to suppress fire. The plan was to land wings-level on the centerline allowing the fuselage to remain intact as the wings were sliced open by eight posts cemented into the runway. The plane landed askew causing burning fuel to enter the cabin.

Operation Credible Sport Popular

Description:

Operation Credible Sport was a US military aircraft modification plan in late 1980 designed for the rescue of hostages held in Iran using C-130s modified with rocket engines. This clip show the crash that effectively killed the project. Often mistakenly atributed to pilot error by firing the rockets too early. Once the braking rockets fired, the aircraft loses most of it's airspeed and lift, descent-arresting then slow the planes vertical speed onto the runway. These rockets failed causing the heavy landing and breakup of the airframe.
