B-17 Daylight Raid  Description:  The B-17 was primarily employed in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The U.S. 8th Air Force based in England complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank, to help secure air superiority over Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord. Despite their legendary ability to absorb damage, especially in belly-landings and ditchings, aircrews faced a 1 in 3 chance of not returning from their missions. Battle for Okinawa  Description:  Archive colour footage showing the final hours of the attack on Okinawa in 1945. The majority of the Japanese refuse to surrender and must be eliminated in their caves and bunkers using hand grenades, high explosive and flame-throwers. A few surviving civilians hidden inside the same caves with the Japanese soldiers, old men, women and children in terrible conditions. Bit O' Lace 1945 Description:  Footage shot by pilot John H. Bauman during of the B-17G "A Bit O' Lace," of the 709th Bomb Squadron of the 447th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, late in World War II (1944-45). Included are bombing missions flown over Germany, and American pilots in flight training at Lodwick Aeronautical School in Lakeland, Florida. The nose art was conceived by Lt. Bauman, designed by cartoonist Milton Caniff, and then painted on the aircraft by Nicholas Fingelly. Music: "Old Souls" by Hans Zimmer. Bombing Raid on Kiska Island  Description:  Original colour documentary footage of B-17's and B-24's attacking Japanese forces on the island of Kiska. The Japanese captured Kiska on 6/06/1942, as a diversionary part of the Japanese plan for the Battle of Midway. This island in the Aleutian island chain, was of little military importance, but the psychological impact of losing U.S. territory was significant. 17/08/1943, the US invasion force landed, only to find the island completely abandoned. The Japanese had withdrawn the previous month under cover of fog. Allied casualties during the invasion nevertheless numbered close to 200, due to friendly fire or booby traps. Hitlers Reich  Description:  September 1939, Nazi Germany invades Poland starting WW2 unleashing six years of unimaginable death and suffering upon the world, with a total death-toll over 70 million people. Motivated by twisted concepts of racial cleansing, between 1939 and 1945 the SS killed between 11 and 14 million people in ghettos, mass executions and concentration camps. The largest being the extermination camp complex of Auschwitz-Birkenau in German occupied Poland, where appromately 1.4 million people were either starved to death or gassed before being cremated on an industrial scale.
